Winter Enrichment Begins This Week!
We are all so excited to start our Enrichment Program this week! There are five classes that were cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Hopefully if you signed up for one of them you have already heard from Ellen, but if not, the cancelled classes are:
- American Sign Language
- Group Music at Morris
- Acting and Conflict Resolution
- Mural Painting at Morris
- French Club at Prescott
There is a waitlist for the following classes:
- Dungeons & Dragons (A)
- Dungeons & Dragons (B)
- AKA Science at Prescott
- Art Club at Prescott
Otherwise your children are signed up for the classes they wanted. There is also still space in most classes so if there is something you were interested in, please let us know.
Also, please note that Ten Chi Kenpo at Morris will not meet this Friday and will instead begin on Friday, January 23rd.
The PTA is excited to invite you to an Ivy School Ice Skating Party at the Lloyd Center Ice Rink starting at 6:00pm on Friday, January 16th. Ivy families and friends are welcome!
We’re seeking volunteers who can help staff the information tables and help sign up new volunteers for various projects and school activities. Email Erica if you’re available to help during all or part of the event, starting at 5:30pm at the Lloyd ice rink. Thank you!
We recommend that skaters wear long socks to protect their legs from being rubbed by the skating boots, as well as comfortable clothing and a lightweight jacket or sweater. Gloves are optional. Wear green and white or your Ivy T-shirts to show your Ivy pride. We hope to see each of you there!
Help Ivy Receive Arts Tax Funds
This Wednesday you will see volunteers with clipboards offering a letter for you to sign. On Monday and Tuesday there will also be copies of the letter, along with signature sheets, at each campus outside each classroom. It is addressed to Portland City Officials who need to hear the effects of their interpretation of the Portland Art Tax Law which was voted on and put into effect in the November 2012 election. It excludes Ivy and Southwest Charter schools from receiving the money. This letter is to express our frustration of the interpretation of the law and requests that the full spirit of the law be upheld, namely that all public schools in Portland city limits be entitled to reach their full share. No exclusions. We hope to have all parents, teachers, and students sign this letter. There will also be another letter written by and for students to sign. The letter was drafted by an Ivy parent who is a lawyer and further developed by the PTA. Thank you, everyone, for your support!
Prescott Climbing Structure Coming Soon!!!!
Thanks to the funds raised in the PTA’s 2014 spring raffle and 2014 Read-a-thon and a generous $1,000 donation from Leah Cutler and her family, we have raised enough to install two playground pieces this year!!! At Wednesday’s PTA meeting there was a vote to decide between two options and we are excited to share these winning images. The climber is 19′ x 5′ across and stands 6′ tall at the peak. The Spinner is 2′ x 2′.
These will be installed in an upcoming Saturday community build that will be led by a certified playground installation contractor. Once the date is set we will be looking for skilled parents to help out during the day of the installation. We are hopeful these two pieces will be installed sometime this spring and we will continue to keep the Ivy community updated as things progress.
Thank you all for helping make this project possible!!!
A discounted admission is being offered to members of The Ivy School community for two events coming up on January 16th and January 17th at the Hollywood Theatre.

On, January 16th, the screening is Harry Smith’s Heaven and Earth Magic.
On, January 17th, the screening is Selected Short Films of Homer Groening.
Yes, it is THAT Homer Groening, the father of The Simpson’s creator, Matt Groening.
The programs are for adults. Middle school kids who are ready for stuff aimed at adults would be fine. Neither program is X-rated. Discounted admission is $10. Without the discount admission is $15. Use the discount code “mcog” when purchasing tickets online at the Hollywood Theater Website.
Warning: The tickets for the Homer Groening event will go fast.
We need at least 15 adults (anyone 13+ years) to sign up, so invite friends, family, and neighbors to run along. We are still in need of 3 more adults or we lose our team status! Team members can choose any event from the line up: 5k, 8k, 15k, or Half Marathon. Kids are welcome to run, too! Race day is Sunday, March 15, 2015.
Register by January 15th to pay the discounted fee. If you miss the discount deadline you can still register until January 31st at the full price. The race packets will be shipped to the Prescott Campus mid-February.
Feel a little nervous about running a race? We believe you can do it! Check out this link for a Couch to 5k training plan. Or post on our google group (see sidebar for details on how to join) your race goals and maybe find other parents/families to train with.
What a great way to kick-off the New Year! We hope to see many of you out there!
