Update On Ivy’s ODE Visit

This past week has been a very busy one for Ivy, with both our annual site visit and renewal request presentation following one another on Wednesday and Thursday.  All the staff worked very hard to make sure that our classrooms were ready for our visitors and the facilities looked beautiful (thank you to Fernando as well!).  The board, parent, and student panels went very well as well as the classroom observations.  ODE board member, Jerome Colonna, who visited our campuses was especially impressed with our program and students.  Than you to everyone who was able to take the time to come to school and represent our program.

On Thursday, the entire leadership team, Kevin, and Betty, as well as our board chair, Kari Wax, went to Salem to present our annual report and our request for the renewal for our charter – this time for five years.  Along with continuing our current program and improving it, we are also requesting permission to start a Kindergarten as well.  Mary, Amy, and Kevin spoke to the  board and presented a wonderful power point slide show with snippets of video from our staff, parents, and students.

Kate Pattison, the program analyst who is our contact at ODE, found many strengths in what we are offering and will be sending us a written report in the next few weeks outlining the areas where we can improve as well.  Kate strongly recommended that the ODE board renew our charter, with stipulations.  We should get a formal, written notice within a few weeks and then we will need to formulate a plan to respond to their requests and begin to negotiate the terms of our new charter.  Our next meeting with the ODE board will be in March.

Thank you to all the many people who worked for months to put this together!

Interim Head of School

Renewal Presentation Coming to Ivy Community

The Ivy School Board of Directors, together with the Ivy Leadership Team, are excited to be able to share the renewal presentation given to the Oregon Department of Education this past Thursday with our Ivy Community.  We are still working on securing a date, but we wanted to let everyone know of this upcoming event.  Renewal team members, Amy Stuhr, Kevin Pearson, Rebecca Keith, and Karilyn Wax will be on hand to walk us through the presentation and renewal process and to answer questions.  We will also have the opportunity to view the amazing renewal presentation video.  We look forward to sharing our presentation and the incredible story it tells about our school!  We will announce the date and time soon!

Upper El Work Share & Call For Volunteers

This coming Wednesday, January 28th, we invite UE5 and UE6 families to come into the classroom(s) from 2:00-3:00pm to see the Pacific Northwest Tribe environments that the students have been creating in culmination of their research.  Students can bring their dioramas home with them after the event.

We are looking for a few parent volunteers to come in Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to help the students with various building, hot gluing stations, and cleanup as they continue to create these dioramas.  Please contact Kevin or Anna to volunteer.

Ivy Welcomes Alison Barros

We are very excited to introduce Alison Barros to the Ivy School.  She is teaching with Angie in LE4 while Claire is on maternity leave.  She has just arrived in Portland from Laos and brings great experience to our community. Please be sure to welcome her when you see her on campus and around town!

My name is Alison Barros. I just spent the last four months teaching at a Montessori school in Vientiane, Laos. Before that, I taught for a year at a Montessori public charter school in Oakland, California and previous to that, I worked for six years at a private Montessori school in Palo Alto. I also taught ESL for a little over two years in both Japan and South Korea. I have a two-year lower elementary teaching credential from CMTE, a Montessori training center, and a BA in sociology from the University of Oregon. When I’m not teaching children how to be independent thinkers and do beautiful work; I’m chilling at home with my cat, listening to music, writing, preparing delicious vegan meals, and masterminding my next adventure. I love Portland and the Montessori method, and I am very excited to be a part of the Ivy team!

Prescott Campus to Visit NWCT

The Prescott Campus is looking forward to their upcoming trip to The Jungle Book at the Northwest Children’s Theater on February 10th.  We are all looking forward to this children’s classic by Rudyard Kipling done Bollywood style.  Many thanks to Merri-beth Santerella and Stephan Bachara who helped orchestrate our visit to this play and our earlier field trip to Mary Poppins.

Duck Care Needed at Morris

It’s a great time to spend a little bit of your weekend caring for the Morris Ducks.   It’s also a great way to volunteer as a family!
Sign up below to help care for the ducks. There are still plenty of opportunities for your help.

Morris Outdoor Program Offers Eggs

Every two weeks the Morris Campus will be offering a dozen duck eggs for financial donations to support our growing outdoor program. They are delicious eggs and great for baking as well!  In the spring we will hopefully be incubating the fertilized eggs and taking them through the entire life cycle.

Eggs are a $10 donation per dozen.  There are a limited amount of spots so eggs will be sold first come first served.  If are interested please sign up on the SignUpGenius link.
